Tattoo Healing Guide
Aftercare Instructions
A great tattoo depends on both the work in the studio and how it heals afterward. Follow the provided aftercare instructions and contact the shop if you have concerns during healing.
Chronological Healing Steps
1
Immediate Wrap Care
- Leave the initial protective wrap or bandage applied by your artist on for **2 to 4 hours**.
- Do not re-wrap the tattoo after removing the bandage. It needs to breathe to heal.
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water *before* touching your new tattoo.
2
Gentle Washing
- Wash the tattoo gently using your bare hands, warm water, and a mild, **fragrance-free liquid soap**.
- Do not use washcloths, sponges, or loofahs, as they harbor bacteria and are too abrasive.
- Gently wash away any dried fluids, blood, or ointment.
- Pat the area completely dry with a clean, single-use paper towel. Do not rub.
3
Moisturizing
- Apply a **very thin layer** of recommended fragrance-free lotion or ointment (like Aquaphor or unscented lotion) to the dry tattoo.
- Rub it in gently until absorbed. The tattoo should look slightly hydrated, not shiny, wet, or greasy.
- If you apply too much ointment, gently dab away the excess with a clean paper towel. Over-moisturizing can clog pores and trap bacteria.
- Repeat washing and moisturizing **2 to 3 times daily** for the first few weeks.
⚠️ Essential Healing Rules
- **Do NOT soak the tattoo**: Avoid baths, hot tubs, swimming pools, lakes, and oceans. Showering is fine, but do not submerge your healing tattoo.
- **Do NOT expose to direct sunlight**: Keep your healing tattoo out of direct sun. Do not apply sunscreen until the tattoo is completely healed (usually 3-4 weeks), then use SPF 30+ to prevent fading.
- **Do NOT pick or scratch**: As the tattoo heals, it will peel and may itch like a mild sunburn. Let the dead skin flake off naturally. Picking or scratching can pull out ink and cause scarring.
